Liverpool's Second Consecutive Loss Ends Their Europa League Hopes

Though Spurs drew their game against Birmingham at White Hart Lane, Liverpool failed to capitalize.

Liverpool and Aston Villa played out a game, which you would not bet was the most intriguing game of the season. The match was stop-start with both sides picking up injuries through the course of the game. Jay Spearing was the first to limp of at the seventh minute being replaced by Jonjo Shelvey.

Liverpool came close to clinching the opener when Raul Meireles; corner, was met by Lucas only to see it cleared of the line by Ashley Young.

The Reds seemed to have taken their foot of the pedal in their previous 2 fixtures and it showed when Aston Villa's netted the opener in the form of Downing.

The rest of the half passed by without much goal-mouth action.

Fabio Aurelio who had returned to the starting line up for this fixture showed why he's so highly rated amongst Liverpool fans, when he prevented Darren Bent from scoring in the 54th minute.

Kenny Dalglish's side squandered another opportunity to score when Suarez's ingenious cut-back found Meireles who's effort could only find the keeper.

This proves that though Liverpool have improved under Kenny Dalglish,  they are by no means ready the Liverpool of old. Major reinforcements will be needed during the summer, if Liverpool are to comeback next season all guns blazing.

We will be reporting any transfer rumor hence forth so stay tuned, and be prepared for a big summer!

Media Talk of The Day (21 May 2011)

Find Out What Pacheco Had To Say In His First Interview After Returning From Loan

Europa League - A Good Thing or a Bad Thing ?

Lucas is convinced that the Europa League is not a handicap and is in-fact positive for Liverpool.

"A few people don't see the importance the Europa League has but when you see the final with a full stadium and a really good atmosphere, of course you want to be there, fighting for trophies,

"That's the way we have to think. We have to try and play in the Europa League - that's really important for the players and the club.
"Hopefully next season we'll be in it.
"We have been on a good run but it's not in our hands. We just need to go into the last game with the same commitment and attitude and try to win. It's always important to finish with a victory and then we'll see what happens."
We seem to agree with him, as we feel that qualifying for the Europa League this season will result in the players gaining a lot of self-confidence as they have worked hard towards it.

Kenny Dalglish 's Press Conference Ahead of Sunday's Game at Villa Park

Dalglish admitted that he wouldn't like to ruin a fantastic feat, whilst also claiming that Liverpool's main objective was to claim the Europa League spot.

"He's been fantastic this year and really grown in stature. He's been a real asset for us.
"He gets credit from the people who really matter - the people here. He wouldn't have played every game if not."
"I don't think they were too happy but they've got the chance to put that right on Sunday," said the Scot.
"Training has been good - it's always good. They are looking forward to the game but the disappointment should be there.
"There were some positive vibes that came out of the game on Sunday."
"Everyone knows the results from most matches whether it's the first, last or middle game of the season. You know what's going on at most places.
"It'll be no different on Sunday but we'll concentrate on our own game and see if we get any favours from somewhere else."
"The most important thing for us is to win the game on Sunday and see where it takes us," he said.
"If we're in the Europa League we're in it, if we're not we just have to get on with it."
"On developing young players, we're going into a competition next year that will help develop young players in Europe. That's not an issue."
Aston Villa have nothing but pride to play for on Sunday having secured their top-flight status despite a serious illness to their manager Gerard Houllier.
In his absence caretaker boss Gary McAllister has overseen some impressive results, including a victory against Arsenal last weekend.
Dalglish added: "The illness to Gerard doesn't help but they are both fantastic footballing people and they've done the most important thing - keeping Aston Villa in the Premier League.
"I'm sure Gary would much rather have Gerard in the role he was meant to be in when he went there, but fate took over. He's done well to keep them up.
"Villa had a fantastic result last week at the Emirates. It's their last home game and I'm sure they'll want to finish the season on a high. They'll be well up for the game."
Also hinted at the possibility of Alberto Aquilani returning to Anfield next season:
"He went out on loan and has done very well over there.
"If he was to come back here, for me that would be like a new face coming in. I don't know of any deadline, I wasn't privy to the conversations that were had. "
"We've got to assess what we need, and that includes the players who have been out on loan," added Dalglish. "They'll assess where they've been and the other clubs will assess them.
"Alberto is the highest profile but we've got decisions to make on (all) those players.
"We've not had time to sit down and discuss the players who have been out on loan apart from Alberto."
Meanwhile, Dalglish thinks comings and goings are inevitable at Melwood this summer - but he has strict criteria about adding players to his squad list.
"The people we'll be looking at are of the highest calibre, because the players here have done really well since January," said the boss. "It would be disrespectful to them not to look at players who are high calibre.
"We've had a great end to the season. There will be lots of work done in the close season and we'll take it from there. Movement is part and parcel of a football club in the summer. We'll be no different.
"Although it might affect them, players themselves expect new faces to come in and give the place a lift. It'll happen and they know it'll happen.
"We've had a lift from our own young players coming in and freshening it up a bit.
"If we get some quality people in to go along with the people already here, that will help everyone. It always helps to freshen up the dressing room.
"But if we're bringing anyone in they've got to be better than what we've got - and that's going to be a big ask."
"When you're on the outside you don't always see the effort and commitment they have," he said. "I've noticed that since I've come in.
"I had no pre-conceived ideas. You have an opinion but it's not definitive.
"A lot of the performances have exceeded what I thought we were capable of. That's a great compliment to them, or maybe I'm just thick and didn't appreciate what we had here!"
Quizzed on how his 3 year contract affected him:
"I wouldn't say it's been a great help - played one, lost one!
"For me, the planning was going on anyway, irrespective of who was coming in because you can't leave it until the last minute. For training and some of the pre-season matches, planning had to be done.  If you're sitting in this chair you've got to make the decision about what you want to do and when you want to train.
"Regarding players, there's only one person who can decide that, and that's the manager. That's something we need to get our skates on with to make sure we get the right players."

Lucas Leiva Voted Player Of The Season By Glen Johnson

Quizzed on who he thought was the player of the season England's right-back replied:

"I would say Lucas, there were rumours at the start of the season that Liverpool were going to sell him but the way he's performed just shows you how quickly things can change in football.

"At the minute he's probably one of the first names in the starting 11. He's won the fans over now for sure, so fair play to him. I'm obviously very pleased for him and his family. He deserves the recognition."
"People talk about ifs, buts and maybes and if we'd had this form at the start, we would have been challenging for the league. But obviously you could say 'what if' about most things.
"Coming up to Christmas we were nearer the bottom of the league than the top and that's obviously crazy. If somebody had told you at the start of the season you'd have just laughed about it. But the lads have shown great character, everyone's stuck together and we've pulled it around.
"It's definitely been a league of two halves for us. It's very frustrating because you can't help but reflect on the fact that if we'd have made a better start and picked up points against teams that we should have beaten we would have been fighting for the Champions League spots.
"The results at the start - well, there were some shockers in there. But when you look at where we are now we know that even if we had picked up a couple more wins we could have been very close.
"That's the frustration but it's in the past now and everything happens for a reason. We're flying now so hopefully this will continue and we will be fighting for the title next year."

Lucas Follows Dirk Kuyt and Jay Spearing, Insisting That There's Still Hope

Dirk Kuyt and Jay Spearing insisted that they weren't giving up on a Europa League spot despite the loss to Spurs. Lucas Leiva seems to be having similar thoughts:

"We have to go there and try to win. I think Birmingham will try to get points from Tottenham and that helps with the way they'll approach the game. They have to get points or they could be relegated.
"At the end of the day it's not in our hands so we just have to do our job. Hopefully then something good will happen for us.
"Villa just beat Arsenal away which shows they are really committed. They have had difficult times this season but they have a good team, a good squad. They showed against Arsenal they can beat any team.
"Getting fifth would be very important for Liverpool. But we still believe we can finish well. You never know. I always try to be positive and think the best thing will happen to Liverpool.
"We have to go into the last game with the commitment we've shown lately."
"At the beginning of the season we were around the relegation zone," Lucas added.
"I don't think anyone was expecting us to finish fifth or sixth and that's a great comeback.
"It's an achievement but we are Liverpool and we want to finish higher than that. The Champions League is the biggest target for us but we just have to finish well and start next season with a really positive mentality and attitude and then we'll have a big chance of making our fans smile again."

Reds Not Prepared To Go Down Without A Fight

Dirk Kuyt and Jay Spearing spoke up for the team, and claimed they weren't going down without a fight on the final match-day. Liverpool's No.18 admitted it was a disappointing performance against Spurs but claimed it was anything but their last shout for a Europa League spot.

"Obviously the result was very disappointing," said Kuyt.

"We all hoped for a good result and a win, but it didn't happen.

"There's still one game to go and hopefully they (Spurs) will draw next week and we win and get into Europe next season.

"It's disappointing. We gave everything but it wasn't as good as the last couple of weeks."

"For me it doesn't matter, as long as I can help the team when I'm playing. That's the most important thing.

"I always want to be vital in games by scoring goals or giving assists, and the most important thing is the result."

Jay Spearing seemed to be on the same wavelength as his teammate and manager, stating that Liverpool's loss was due to a slow start:

"Right from the off we didn't start quick enough and they got on top of us and caused us a lot of problems,

"In the second half we seemed to step it up a little bit but unfortunately it was too late."

"There's not much I can say about it now but I don't think it was a penalty. The referee gave it and we have to get on with it.

"We've got to go to Aston Villa now and make sure we get the three points and then see what happens in the Birmingham game.

"We still believe we can do it and we will give it everything we have got in the last game."

Kenny's Verdict

"I think they started better than we did, scored a goal and we didn't start to play for 25-30 minutes," the boss told his post-match press conference.
"We started to look a bit better, but then at the start of the second half they got the second goal and that gave them a real foothold in the game.
"It was difficult for us to break them down. We didn't have enough on the day to break them down and penetrate their goal, but I don't think Pepe was overly busy either.
"We never played as well as we can play and that's a disappointment for the players because it would have been a fitting way for them to finish the last game of the season at Anfield for the efforts they've put in since January. But maybe it was too much of a fairytale.
"We're disappointed we never got the result because it would have been a fitting way to end."
He added: "We don't know why we didn't start as well as what we have done and are capable of, but I suppose like in everything else, you get days like that."
"It's just unhelpful to everybody we can't express our true thoughts and it's even more disappointing that the officials get away scot free without coming in to explain their decisions as well.
"I think it's safer for me to leave it at that and get on with the next question.
"It's not a race for fifth place in my mind, it's just disappointment there at the performance.
"You can have refereeing mistakes but you cannot legislate for that - we can only look after ourselves. We could have been a greater help to ourselves if we had started the game better than we did."
"Whoever is going to play, it doesn't affect anybody's approach or attitude to the game - you go into the game, you start nice and sharp and on you go.
"He hasn't trained as much as he or we would have liked. We were forced into playing him a wee bit because David Ngog had only had 45 minutes in a reserve game, so it was either him or Andy. For Andy to last as long as he did was more than we expected.
"I don't think a change in the way you play should contribute to changes in attitude and approach to the game. We never approached it well enough in the first half and paid the price for that."
"We feel as though we've short-changed them by not getting the result," said Dalglish.
"That's the disappointing thing. The appreciation will always be here for their support, so sometimes it's nice to reward that with a victory and it was unfortunate we couldn't do that today."

Liverpool's Last Game at Anfield Ends In A Defeat

Liverpool's fine form under Kenny Dalglish came to an abrupt halt after goals from Rafael Ferdinand van der Vaart and Luka Modrić led Tottenham into 5th spot.

Spurs started well and got their reward for it, Rafael Van der Vaart's volley from distance took a slight deflection off Glen Johnson and went into Pepe Reina's net.

The rest of the half was 'stop-start' due to some tough tackles and a few  out-brakes.

Liverpool's were getting frustrated, and it showed when consistent full-back John Flanagan gave  away a controversial penalty.

The naive youngster went shoulder to shoulder with Steven Pienaar at the edge of the box, only to see the referee point to the spot. Though Liverpool players were dumbfounded by the decision they could not keep Luka Modric from converting the penalty.

Liverpool fans will still have hope as always that Tottenham will either draw or lose their final game and that Liverpool will be able to win theirs.

Andy Carroll To Feature Against Tottenham

Liverpool's No.9 looked likely to miss the match against Tottenham. However, he has recovered rapidly and could take part in the fixture on Sunday.

In his absence Kenny Dalglish has found a hat-trick hero in Maxi Rodriguez and a dazzling genius in Luis Suarez. Hence he may toying on whether to risk playing Andy on Sunday.

Dalglish told his pre-match press conference:

"Andy is back training. Raul (Meireles) isn't too bad either and Fabio (Aurelio) is back training too.

"We know it's a huge test against Spurs. They have been punished for their success this year. They've had too many games and have been competing in too many competitions. That's unfortunate for them but it's a measure of their success that they've gone that close. So it's going to be a tough game.
"It would have been a difficult game anyway, irrespective of whether it was the second to last game of the season or the second game of the season.
"Our boys won't be judged by what happens on Sunday though. They should be judged by what has happened since January. They've been an absolute credit to the football club since then."
Dalglish also praised Jay Spearing on making the England U21's 40 man squad for this summer's European Championships.

"It's a great reward for Jay. He's on a good run at the moment. Obviously his performances have been fantastic. He's signed an extended contract and he's got a call-up to the England squad which is fantastic for him.
"It hasn't made any difference to him though. He was there in training, working the same as he had before. That's important, that when people get success they are able to handle it.
"He's certainly been able to do that, so we are delighted he has got his reward."
He was also quizzed his targets for next season and he replied:
"Our next game is the most important one. That (philosophy) has put me in good stead throughout my playing career and my managerial career. You're not going to change me and I'm not going to change my beliefs.
"I don't think they've done me too badly in the past so I'm not going to change now.
"We all want exactly the same thing and that is more important than sitting here and shouting our mouths off about what we are aiming for.
"We are aiming for three points on Sunday and then we will take it from there."
